Idaho Wildfire Season intensifies with new Blazes
Idaho will be experiencing a wildfire season that is active as of July 16, 2026. Multiple fires are burning in the entire state. Idaho Department of Lands reported that over 120,000 acres of land have been burned this summer due to hot and dry weather conditions, as well as lightning.
Recent Major Fires
Pioneer Fire, near Boise has burned over 45,000 acres, and it is currently 35 percent contained. Multiple agencies of firefighters are protecting nearby communities as well as critical infrastructure. The Salmon River Complex, in central Idaho has reached 28,000 acres and containment is at only 22 percent.
Evacuations, Air Quality and Safety
The county of Valley has issued evacuation orders for several neighborhoods. Shelters have been opened in McCall, Cascade and other nearby towns. Air quality alerts have been issued in southern and central Idaho due to smoke from fires. Health officials are advising residents to reduce outdoor activity.
State and Federal response
Brad Little, the Governor of New York State, has mobilized additional National Guard personnel to assist in firefighting. U.S. Forest Service hotshot crews have been deployed to most active areas. The U.S. Forest Service continues to encourage the public to adhere to all current fire restrictions across state and national lands.
