Idaho Falls Seeks Community Input on Future Transportation Needs

Transportation planning is underway in the Idaho Falls area as local officials gather public input on how the region’s transportation network should develop over the coming years.

The Bonneville Metropolitan Planning Organization (BMPO) is currently asking residents to help identify transportation priorities, including improvements related to walking, biking and driving. The feedback will be incorporated into the region’s Long-Range Transportation Plan, which will help guide transportation decisions over the next 25 years.

What This Means for Local Residents

Transportation improvements can affect how residents reach work, schools, stores, parks and other everyday destinations.

The BMPO’s current public-input process specifically asks residents to identify places where transportation conditions make it difficult to travel comfortably and safely. Residents can submit feedback through an online survey and interactive community map.

Public Transit in Idaho Falls

Idaho Falls currently provides public transportation through Greater Idaho Falls Transit (GIFT), an on-demand microtransit service that operates throughout the city and serves residents across different age groups and neighborhoods.

City documents describe GIFT as a door-to-door, shared-ride service. The city has also been preparing for additional vehicles supported by carbon-reduction grants, which could help the program respond to increased demand.

Idaho Transportation Department lists GIFT as the public transportation provider serving Idaho Falls.

Community Input Is Part of the Process

Residents currently have an opportunity to contribute to the region’s transportation planning.

The BMPO’s survey and interactive map are scheduled to remain open until September 30, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Residents can use the tools to identify transportation concerns and suggest priorities for future improvements.

According to the BMPO, public feedback will help officials identify priorities related to safety, congestion and connectivity as the region plans for future growth.

Looking Ahead

The current process is focused on gathering information and developing long-term transportation priorities rather than announcing a finalized expansion of fixed bus routes.

As Idaho Falls and the surrounding region continue to grow, transportation planners will use community feedback, transportation data and future planning work to help determine which improvements should be prioritized.
