⛴️ Washington State Ferries: What Riders Should Know

Washington State Ferries continues to manage a busy 2026 season while working through vessel maintenance, staffing needs, and the challenges of operating an aging fleet.

The system has handled a particularly busy summer. Washington State Ferries reported nearly 7 million riders between Memorial Day and the end of August, its busiest summer since 2019. During Labor Day weekend, the system completed 98.9% of its scheduled sailings.

What This Means for Riders

Although most scheduled sailings continue to operate, individual trips can still be affected by vessel issues, crew availability, maintenance, weather, or schedule adjustments.

WSF reported that during the week of August 31 through September 6, 47 sailings were canceled. Of those, 20 were related to vessel issues and 17 to crewing, while other cancellations resulted from schedule resets and miscellaneous causes.

What Riders Can Do

• Check your route before leaving home for the latest sailing information.
• Allow extra time, particularly during busy travel periods.
• Use the WSDOT mobile app or WSF website for real-time ferry status and rider alerts.
• Check terminal traffic cameras when traveling with a vehicle.
• Consider vehicle reservations on routes where reservations are available.
• Sign up for ferry text alerts to receive route and schedule updates.

Maintenance and Service Reliability

As the busy summer season ends, WSF is increasing scheduled maintenance on its aging fleet. The agency notes that when a vessel is unavailable and no spare boat is available, maintenance taking longer than expected can affect service.

WSF’s 2026 Service Contingency Plan is designed to help the agency respond when vessels or terminals become unavailable because of mechanical problems or crew shortages while communicating service changes to customers.
